A white stone plaque naming casualties from World War II. The original panels have been supplemented by a further list of names, of people from the St Helens / Nettlestone area.

A R ALLEN (MISS) No CWGC record.Audrey Ruth Allen, who died on 29th April 1943 at New Barn Farm, Shorwell. An agricultural worker with the Women's Land Army, she died as a results of injuries sustained when the tractor she was driving overturned. She was the daughter of Amos Richard Allen Torpedoman Royal Navy and lived at 20 Dover St, Ryde.

F I SPARSHOTT No CWGC record.According to the IW County Press of 24 Aug 1940, Frank Isaac Sparshott died on 20 August 1940, as a result of being shot accidentally by a soldier. He lived at 2 Council Houses, Church Lane, Haven Street.

The Rev and Mrs Atyeo were deported from Jersey to Germany. The Rev Atyeo died shortly before they were to be released. Mrs Atyeo is buried in Ryde Cemetery. (RSHG)

In 1911 Jack, his mother and several of her relatives were living in Eastney; Frank Petty was at sea serving on HMS Exmouth (at Malta)
Jack joined the Royal Navy 18 Aug 1918 (10 years) SS 9421 (PO)
Killed in action 15 Jan 1945 - his ship MV Maja (London) was an armed merchant tanker carrying 19,680 tons of gas oil and spirit from Swansea bound for Belfast and Iceland when torpedoed by U-1055
He was buried at Douglas, Isle of Man with one other rating and four Chinese seamen from the Maja
He left a widow and 2 children.
His mother was Marion Emmeline Louisa Cecilia Harris born 1875. After Frank Petty's death at sea in 1914 she went on to marry George William Block, a newsagent and tobacconist of High Street, Ryde. She died in 1921.
His reputed father was Frank Petty born 14 May 1881 who enlisted as a gunner in the RMA in 1900, and was serving aboard HMS Aboukir when she was sunk by enemy action in the North Sea, 22 Sep 1914.

Antony Diarmuid MacDermott CWGC record ... From the IW County Press, 21 Oct 1939 : Cadet Anthony George (sic) Macdermott, aged 17, only son of Commander A.F.J. MacDermott, O.B.E., R.N., ret. (hon. secretary of the Royal Victoria Y.C.) and Mrs. MacDermott, of Leamington House, St John's Park, Ryde. He was on his first commission. A lad of particular promise, he had passed out in the A division from H.M.S. Britannia, Dartmouth, earlier in the year. He was a member of Ryde Lawn Tennis Club, and also of the I.W. Foot Beagles. Born in Ryde, in 1918, the son of William Wade and Dorcas Clara Wade (née Jones). The family emigrated to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, in the early 1920s. F W Wade died while on air operations over Denmark, on 26th October 1941.
