See map on www.streetmap.co.uk National Inventory of War Memorials Record Link : NIWM Reference 40871 English Heritage Listing Status St Mildred's Church is Grade I Listed. Since the Memorial is situated within the curtilage of the Church, is it assumed that it is included within the Listing. Description Calvary cross, with a stone panel bearing the names of Great War and World War II names on the church wall behind the calvary. The cross, of Portland stone, with a teak Calvary, is 14 ft 6 in high, and was designed by Percy Stone, F.S.A. The inscription is a bronze panel at the base of the cross. The figure of Christ is in bronze. The dedication service was conducted by the Bishop of Southampton and the memorial was unveiled on 20th September 1919 by HRH Princess Beatrice, whose son, Prince Maurice of Battenberg, is the first named on the Memorial. Originally the names of the fallen were displayed in the church, but later (date unknown) the panels naming the fallen were installed on the wall. |
