William Gardner Silvester was born in Ryde in 1888 to Thomas and Elizabeth Silvester (nee Dyer) and had 4 sisters and 3 brothers. His father was a brewer's labourer. They lived at 13 Bettesworth Road, Haylands. William G. Silvester first served in WW1 at Gallipoli, landing on 10th August 1915. He took part in the infamous attack of 12th August and died of heart failure on 14th August.
