Since the Memorial is sited within the curtilage of the Church, it is assumed to be covered by the Listing. Description A calvary cross with panels naming casualties from the Great War. There are six panels, for the Great War names, but no names for World War II. It was unveiled by the Rt Hon Maj-Gen J E B Seely, Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, and was dedicated by the Bishop of Southampton on 11th March 1921. Notes : (for those where there is no confirmed identification through the CWGC records) HUGH CLARKE Hugh Ronald V Clarke was born in Gosport 1899. In 1911 the family were at Cyprus Cottage, Castle St. Ryde. His service record and cause of death have not been confirmed. JAMES A BURNETT James Albert George Burnett was born in Ryde 1885, and died in 1919. It is presumed that he served in the Armed Forces at some point. E MAXWELL PHAIR is probably Canon Ernest Edward Maxwell Phair, (born 1871 in Manitoba, Canada), who was lost in the sinking of the Lusitania, 7 May 1915, but his connection with Ryde is not known. FRANK READ is probably Charles Frank Reed, son of Elizabeth Reed, of Warwick St., Ryde, Isle of Wight. Served with Canadian Infantry (New Brunswick Regiment). CWGC record ... Died 3 June 1917. DONALD R SCOVELL was born in Ryde 1899 and died on 23 May 1920 as a result of being gassed in the Great War. He is buried in Ryde Cemetery, where his headstone inscription includes "He did his duty for King and Country". |
