Obituary
PTE. GEORGE HERBERT FORD
We regret to hear that Pte. G.H. Ford, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Ford, has died in France from the effects of being "gassed" the day before the armistice with the enemy was signed. He formerly worked for Messrs. Albert Bull and Porter and went to Canada a few years ago [1], joining the forces soon after the outbreak of war. Pte. Ford died at Etaples on November 18th. His father left for France on receipt of the news.

A memorial service for Pte. George Herbert Ford, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Ford, who was "gassed" on the day before armistice was signed, was held at the Parish Church on Wednesday, and was attended by members of the family and friends. The Vicar (Rev. R.W. Colquhoun) gave a very sympathetic address.


[1] Geo. H. Ford is listed on the Passenger Lists of the "Ausonia" departing Southampton 16 May 1911 for Quebec. He is described as aged 18, Single, and occupation "Lbr" [Labourer?].

MEMORIAL TABLET
A resolution was passed to apply for a faculty for the creation in the Church of a mural monument to the memory of George Herbert Ford, Canadian Light Horse, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Ford, Ventnor, who died in the service of his country at Etaples, Nov. 18, 1918, aged 25 years. A design of the proposed memorial was submitted and approved by the meeting.
