Son : of George Cox and Emily Cox (née Cook), of Shorwell, Isle of Wight.

Born : 1878, Shorwell. (according to R.N. record 15 Oct 1876).

1881 : George and Emily Cox, with their children including Alfred aged 7, and James aged 3, are at Moor Cottage, Shorwell. George Cox is an Agricultural Labourer.
1891 : George and Emily Cox, with their children including Alfred aged 16, James aged 12, and Herbert aged 1, are at Bathingbourn Cottage, Sandford. George Cox is an Agricultural Labourer.
1901 : James Cox, 22 and single, a Stoker with the Royal Navy, is lodging at the Sailors Welcome Coffee Tavern, 88 Queen Street, Portsmouth.
1911 : James Cox, 34 and single, a Stoker Petty Officer with the Royal Navy, is serving on H.M.S. Albatross in Malta.

Field Marshal Lord Kitchener lost his life in the sinking, in addition to 643 crew. Only a handful of men survived.

His brothers Alfred and Herbert also served in the First World War, and are named on the Shorwell St Peter's Church Roll of Honour WW I.

Alfred Cox served with the Royal Navy (Official number 170076, date of birth given as 21 April 1873, according to his Service record (ADM/188/378/76)).

Herbert Cox served with the Dorsetshire Regiment.
