Son of George Coates and Emma Amelia Coates (née Sillitoe).


Born 1862, Sudbury, Suffolk.

Husband of Rosa Eleanor Coates (née Barton, married 1886 in Sudbury), of "East Holme," St. Paul's Avenue, Shanklin, Isle of Wight.

1881 : George and Emma Coates, with their family including Edward, are shown at 39, Friars Street, Sudbury. Edward is shown as a Baker.

1891 : Edward and Rose Coates, with their family, are at 28, Market Hill, Sudbury, Suffolk. Edward Coates is a Master Confectioner and Baker .

1901 : Edward and Rose Coates, with their family, are at Boarding House, High Street, Shanklin. Edward Coates is a Refreshment Contractor.

1911 : Edward and Rose Coates, with four daughters, are at High Street, Shanklin. Edward Coates is a Restaurant Proprietor.

  Service details :

Rifleman P/1773 Edward Francis Coates, 19th Bn Rifle Brigade

Edward Coates attested in the Rifle Brigade on 27 October 1915 at Aldershot, stating that he had previously served with the 5th Volunteer Brigade, Hampshire Regiment.
He was posted for service with the British Expeditionary Force in France and was appointed Acting Sergeant. He was discharged in August 1917 as no longer fit for military service and died in Mile End Military Hospital 21 September 1917. The cause of death was given as pulmonary tuberculosis.

Died : 21 September 1917 aged 55

Buried at : Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey.

It appears that Edward Francis Coates volunteered for further military service soon after the death of his son Edwin Harry (Jack) Coates who died 14 March 1915.
