George Austin King was born in 1889 in Sandown. At the 1891 Census the family were at 28, Fitzroy Street, Brading, Sandown, where John King is described as a Painter, Paper Hanger and Picture Frame Maker. In 1901, the family are shown at 1, Kimberley Villas, Sandown. His father's occupation at this time was a house painter. In 1911, they are still at 1, Kimberley Villas, and George Austin King's trade is a carpenter. According to the Australian War Memorial circular, and information given by his aunt Mrs Phillips, George King attended Sandown National School, and Sandown Secondary School. He served with the Hampshire Territorials. It is not known when he moved to Australia.
