Richard Stanley Knott was born in Surmane, Africa (*) and living on the Isle of Wight, enlisted at Woldingham. Serving with the 16th Battalion Middlesex Regiment he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 17 November 1915. He was killed in action at the ‘Hawthorn Redoubt’ on 1 July 1916 - the first day of the battle of the Somme. He was buried in Auchonvillers Military Cemetery. He was the son of Alfred George and Sarah Elizabeth Knott of Mountfield, High Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight.

One of his medals was sold at auction on 5th April 2006, described as follows :

British War Medal 1914-20 (PS-1376 Cpl. R. S. Knott, Midd’x. R.)
