Sergeant Alderslade served with 500 Squadron Royal Air Force equipped with Avro Anson aircraft used by Coastal Command for patrols over the North Sea. At the time of his death the Squadron were based at RAF Detling in Norfolk. He is commemorated at the Air Forces Memorial, Runnymede.

John Alderslade's cousin Donald Edwin Abraham died as a result of injuries received in the air raid on Newport 7 April 1943. Donald Abraham's mother was a sister of John Alderslade's father.
