Frederick David Thompson was born in 1881, the son of David Thompson (a farm labourer) and his wife Mary Jane (nee Young). The family lived at Drapers, Brook Side, Brighstone. By 1901 the family had moved to Bartlett's Green, Brading, where Frederick was also employed as an agricultural labourer. Frederick emigrated to Australia at about the age of 24, settling in Sydney, and continued to work as a labourer. He was killed in action at Gallipoli.
