In Loving Memory of FREDERICK WILLIAM THE DEARLY BELOVED HUSBAND OF ALICE JAMES DIED OF WOUNDS RECEIVED IN ACTION IN FRANCE JUNE 8TH 1917 AGED 26 YEARS Further Information Frederick William James was born in 1891, the son of Henry and Maria Louisa (nee Moorman) James. He was married on the 17 April 1915 to Alice Squibb, daughter of Mrs G Squibb, at St John's Church, Oakfield, Ryde. From the IOW Times and Hampshire Gazette of Thursday 21 June 1917 : The funeral of Sergt. Fredk. William James of the Royal Garrison Artillery, of Harding Road, Oakfield, who died in the County of London War Hospital from wounds received in France took place on Thursday, the body being brought to Ryde for burial. The deceased who was only 26 years of age, was in Hong Kong at the outbreak of war. and afterwards served in France for about 19 months, being wounded at Arras on April l6th. The deceased was accorded Military honours, the Worcester Regt. providing the band, firing party, and bugles, the coffin being covered with the Union Jack. The first part of the service was held in St. John's Church, the Rev. Wilson Pearce officiating. The Mourners were Mrs F.W.James (widow), Mr James (father), Pte Albert M James (brother), Mrs Parsons (sister), Mrs Williamson (aunt), Mr and Mrs Squibb (father-in-law and mother-in-law). Mr George Squibb (brother-in-law), Mrs E James, Mrs A Gawn, Mrs Oliver James, Mrs P Love, Mrs A Pocock and Mrs P Williams (sisters-in-law), Pte E Squibb, Miss R Dyer, Mrs C White, and the Misses Gatrall. At the conclusion of the burial the usual three volleys were fired over the grave, and the bugles sounded the mournful notes of the Last Post. There was a large number of beautiful floral tributes, among them one from the staff and patients in B. Ward County of London War Hospital, Epsom.
