The aircraft took off at 17:21 hrs from RAF Snaith to block the town area of Homberg to prevent the use of a communications route leading to the battlefront. As the aircraft returned to base it crashed into an embankment at the end of the long runway at RAF Snaith. The second pilot, Pilot Officer David Johnston Hovell, was on his first trip on operations. All the crew members died and each were buried in their home towns. Their memory is preserved in the memorial gardens at RAF Snaith.
