Robert John Wendes, son of Samson and Blanche Ethel May Wendes, of Newport.
The aircraft, a de Havilland Mosquito Mk.IX (ML907) of 109 Sqn, took off from RAF Little Staughton at 13.45 hrs for Ops to Julich in Germany.
The pilot was Warrant Officer Joseph Garcia-Webb, the navigator Warrant Officer Wendes. On return they experienced bad weather
and decided to make a Standard Beam Approach, but on nearing the runway they were seen to pull sharply to avoid overhead High Tension cables, and in doing so
Garcia-Webb lost control of the aircraft, which stalled and spun into the ground at 15.25 hrs near the airfield killing both.
Garcia-Webb is buried at Willesden Jewish Cemetery (CWGC record ...).
