English Heritage Listing Status

St Mary's Church is Listed Grade I. Since the War Memorial is situated within the curtilage of the Church, it is assumed to be covered by the Listing.

Description

Stone cross. Base has 2 panels for WW I names, a plaque for WW II, and a later panel for the WW II names.

Erected by public subscription, and unveiled 8th May 1921 by Lady Seely. Dedicated by the Bishop of Southampton.

A small plaque with no names, in recognition of the World War II losses, was installed in 1994, funded by the Daisy Rich Trust, and the Newport and Carisbrooke branch of the Royal British Legion.
A panel giving the names of 18 men who died in World War II was added in 2001.
A further Great War name was added to the 1939-45 panel in 2002 or 2003.
The name of G Goulding who died in the Malayan Emergency has also been added.

The additional Portland stone panel was executed by Wight Stonemasonry Ltd.
