Son of : Joseph Witham and Phillis Witham (née Philpot), of Newport, Isle of Wight.

Born : 1885, Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight.

[Mrs Witham's maiden name is given in offical records as variously as Philpott, Phillpot, Philpott, or Phillpott.]
  Census information :

1891 : Joseph and Phillis Witham, with their children including William aged 6, are at 2 Worsley Road, Newport, Isle of Wight. Joseph Witham is a General labourer.

1901 : Joseph and Phillis Witham, with their children including William aged 16, are at 12 Worsley Road, Newport, Isle of Wight. Joseph Witham is a Stationary Engine Driver; William Witham is a Shop Boy at Currier.

1911 : Joseph and Phillis Witham, with their children including William aged 26, are at Quay Cottage, Newport, Isle of Wight. Joseph Witham is an Engine Driver at Sewage Works; William Witham is an Engine Fitter and Turner.

  Service Details :

Corporal 1530 William Herbert Witham, 1/8th Bn., Hampshire Regiment, (Isle of Wight Rifles).

Casualty Details :

Died : 12 Aug 1915, aged 30.

Commemorated at : Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

This is a copy of a letter sent by William Herbert Witham's mother, to her son, which was received by the Ottoman Red Crescent organisation. It is understood that they replied to say that her son was not a Prisoner of War, and consequently had to be presumed Killed in Action.

Alexander Witham (b. 1878) - served as a Serjeant with the Royal Field Artillery, later commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, later appointed Temp. Captain.
Ralph Witham (b. 1883) - Trinity Pilot and Merchant Navy
