Son of the Rev. William Goldsborough Whittam and Florence Lucy Whittam (née Peirce), of Messing Vicarage, Kelvedon, Essex.

Born 1893 Ryde.

1901 : William and Florence Whittam with their children including Matthew aged 7, are shown at the Isle of Wight College, Appley, Ryde.

1911 : Matthew Whittam, aged 17 and still at school, is with his uncle Matthew Whittam, at 75 Creffield Road, Acton, Middlesex.

Lieut. Matthew John Goldsborough Whittam, 8th Bn Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

  Casualty Details :

Died : 11 August 1915 aged 21

Buried at : Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

WHITTAM. - August 11th, of wounds received in action in Gallipoli, Matthew John Goldsborough Whittam, only and beloved son of the Rev. W.G. and Mrs. Whittam, The Vicarage, West Norwood, formerly of the I.W. College, Ryde, aged 21 years.

Lieut. M.J.G. Whittam, 8th Batt. Duke of Wellington's Regiment, who has died of wounds sustained in the Dardanelles, received his commission in February of this year. He is a son of the Rev. W.G. Whittam, for many years headmaster of the I.W. College, Ryde.
