Ventnor District Council.

VOTES OF CONDOLENCE.
The Chairman said before commencing the business he had to call the Council's attention to the loss which Ventnor had sustained in the death of two of its citizens, who had died for King and Country at the front. He asked them to pass votes of condolence with the relatives of Pte. William John Stripp, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stripp, and Rifleman Edgar Westmore, son of Gunner Westmore. Continuing, the Chairman said he was sure all felt that these two men had made the greatest possible sacrifice in the interest of their country, and he thought it only right to recognise their services by a vote of condolence. There were also many in the town who were suffering a great deal of anxiety and sorrow with regard to their loved ones. A large number of the men of the Hants Regiment had suffered very seriously, and a great many had been wounded. The vote was carried in the usual way.

The following letter was read: -
3 Cyprus Villas, Ventnor,
May 19th, 1917,
Dear Sirs, - I beg respectfully to acknowledge receipt of the kind note of condolence passed by vote of your Council last Monday relative to the sad loss of our youngest son on the battlefield, and shall treasure your united recognition of the high services he rendered to our King and Country in this time of our greatest peril. Your letter has deeply touched our hearts. He was a brave boy on the Somme and elsewhere all through the severe winter. We miss and mourn for the dead one, who will never return but "we sorrow not as those who will have no hope." Sincerely thanking you, dear sir, and the members of your Council.
Yours faithfully,
J.A. STRIPP
