A FINE RECORD
The Ventnor Gas and Water Company has suffered heavily in the loss of employees owing to the war. During the first week in August all the men, with the exception of the foreman, left the Gas Works. Four outside men were then procured, and trained to the work, but within six weeks two of them enlisted. A clerk and one man in charge of the waterworks have also joined the colours. Another man left this week. At present the Company is working six men short. Out of four fitters only one remains for this special work. A former stoker, named Ridges, was killed in action last week. Another stoker - S. Stevens - is interred in Holland with the National Brigade. One of the directors is a prisoner of war in Germany. He was an officer in the Sherwood Foresters. We understand that no other company of this character in the United Kingdom has given so large a proportion of its staff to the National cause.

IN MEMORIAM
RIDGES. - In loving memory of my dear husband, Harry Ridges, who was killed in action, Dec. 19th, 1914.
No loving hands are there to tend and cherish,
That grave in foreign soil beyond the seas,
Somewhere in France, Ah, surely my beloved,
Though sign and token all be swept away,
It is not in that land of desolation,
But in my heart that you will rest always.
- From his sorrowing wife and two little daughters.

Tears of sorrow often flow,
For memory keeps the loved one near me,
Tho' he died two years ago."

IN MEMORIAM
In loving memory of my dear husband, Harry Ridges, who was killed in action, Dec. 19th, 1914.
Not now, but in the coming years
It may be in the Better Land,
We'll know the meaning of our tears,
And then perhaps we'll understand.
