ARRETON
Pte. Robert Dale, Northumberland Fusiliers is officially reported wounded and missing. He was a reservist, and worked for Mr. Kemp Urry, Perreton, before the war.

Robert DALE was born in Harome, Yorkshire in the Sep Qtr 1876, the son of Robert DALE and his wife Alice BEST. In 1881 the family was living at Railway Cottage, Harome where Robert senior was a platelayer. By 1891 Robert was a 15 year old farm servant living in the household of Elizabeth KIRBY at Carlton, Helmsley, Yorkshire and in 1901 he was a 24 year old carter on a farm living in the household of Thomas WHITFIELD at Elmswood Road, Colton, Temple Newsom, Yorkshire.

On 10 April 1910 Robert married Evelyn Laura WRAY at St John's Church, Newport. She was the daughter of Charles Edward WRAY, a draper, and his wife Emily Nicklin née KING of Terrace Road, Newport. Their first child, Margaret Lavinia May DALE, was born in 1910. In 1911 Robert was a cement maker at the Cement Mill, aged 34, living with his wife and daughter at 31 Orchard Street, Newport. Their second child, Robert Keith DALE, was born on 13 March 1912 and their third, Christopher William DALE, was born on 25 December 1913. In September 1915 his wife registered their daughter Margaret at Arreton School and in May 1916 their son Robert was also registered at the school.

In May 1916 the Isle of Wight County Press reported Private R. DALE of the Northumberland Fusiliers as being wounded and missing. In November 1916 both children were withdrawn from Arreton School and left the district. Robert DALE's wife, Evelyn Laura, died on 14 February 1918 at the Royal Isle of Wight County Hospital at Ryde, age 38. The children lived with their grandmother, Emily Nicklin WRAY, and their aunt and uncle, George Rayner COTTON and his wife, May Beatrice née WRAY, sister of Evelyn Laura.

Robert DALE's wife, Evelyn Laura WRAY, was the cousin of Bertie Howard WRAY who is also commemorated on Newport War Memorial.
