DIED IN CAPTIVITY
News was received on Monday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Whittington, 30 Hunnyhill, of the death on July 7th of their only son, Lance-Sergt. Basil Arthur Whittington, R.A., while a prisoner in Japanese hands at Kuching camp, Borneo.
Similar sad news has also been received of the death of his comrade in captivity, Gunner Kenneth Dudley, R.A., son of the late Mr. F.W. Dudley and Mrs. Dudley, of Woodleigh, Castle-road, whose wife (formerly Miss Mary Taylor) lives at Priory-road, Carisbrooke. Both were captured at the fall of Singapore.

Kenneth Dudley was the brother-in-law of Violet Lily Dudley (née Ashton, married to Ronald Frank Dudley) and uncle of her daughter Valerie Lilian Dudley who are shown on the Newport Civilian War Dead list. They died on the 7th April 1943.
