The squadron, based at North Coates, was engaged in mine-laying activities. The aircraft in which Wing Cdr Mellor was flying was lost without trace while laying mines in Schiling Road north of Wilhelmshaven. Mellor was commissioned in the Royal Air Force prior to World War II and had attended course at the RAF Staff College, and in the operation of torpedoes.

Wing Cdr Mellor had lived in either Bembridge or St Helens, Isle of Wight.
