The aircraft took off for Tobruk to evacuate HQS staff of 258 Wing, which was to include Commanding Officer Wing Commander Johnson and Sqn Ldr Cox, to take them to the Western Desert. The Blenheim was attacked by a German Messerschmidt Me109 of I/J 27 flown by Oberfuhrer Marseille (Top Score German Pilot in the Western Desert), and Marseille chased it out to sea and saw it go straight into the sea. All crew were lost in the crash.

The Rev Cox had lived in Sandown, Isle of Wight.
