Alfred Stanley Rayner was born in 1896. He was the 13th child and youngest son of Thomas Rayner (a house painter) and his wife Eliza Fanny (nee Eldridge). The 1891 Census shows the family at Bedworth Road, Ryde, although Alfred is listed by his middle name Stanley. The family lived at 47 St John's Road, Ryde, in 1911. Alfred is shown as an errand boy for a Boot Dealer. It is not known exactly when Alfred emigrated to Australia.

Robert Dunbar writes : "A S Rayner was Alfred Stanley Rayner, who served in the Australian Infantry. He was killed at Gallipoli on 27-08-1915.
Alfred was my Fathers' Mothers' brother. He came to Australia from the Isle of Wight, with his sister Florence Ellen Rayner, thought to be around 1912 / 1913.
(Have not been able to identify the ship they arrived on).
He is the brother of Arthur Edward Rayner who is also named on the Ryde Great War plaque."
