Biographical details

From the Isle of Wight County Press, 27 July 1919 :

In the presence of many comrades who fought with him at Gallipoli, the funeral took place at Northwood Cemetery on Friday week of ex-Rifleman Stanley Thomas Ivory, son of Mr Ivory of Cross Street. The deceased went to Gallipoli with the IW Rifles and was invalided home suffering from shell shock, from which he never recovered. He was 26 years of age. Captain E Moore, Lieut. G H Hamond, and about 30 former N.C.O.s and men of the Rifles followed the remains to the grave, and ex-CSM H Sheath and Riflemen Arold, Ince, Peach, Davies and Lane acted as bearers. A Union Jack covered the coffin. The Rev. Father J O'Hanlon officiated, and Bugler Marshall sounded the 'Last Post'. The mourners were the father, two sisters and two brothers. A beautiful floral tribute was inscribed 'In memory of Rifleman Ivory, and with sincere sympathy, from some of his old comrades of the Isle of Wight Rifles, July 18th 1919'.

Stanley Ivory was born in Woolston, Southampton, in May 1893. He joined the IW Rifles in 1911, and was sent to Gallipoli in July 1915. He was sent home in February 1916, and discharged to pension. He died in the IW County Asylum on 14 July 1919, and is buried in Plot A1 grave 2979 at Northwood Cemetery.
