Since the Memorial forms part of the fittings of the Church, it is assumed to be covered by the Listing. Description A brass plaque commemorating Sir Faithful Fortescue who took part in the English Civil War, 1642. The plaque was erected by a descendant, in 1866, on the 200th anniversary of his death. It was manufactured by Hart & Son, London. |

IN MEMORY OF COLONEL SIR FAITHFUL FORTESCUE, KNIGHT, SON OF JOHN FORTESCUE, ESQRE, OF BUCKLAND FILLEIGH IN DEVON BY SUSANNAH DAUGHTER OF SIR JOHN CHICHESTER OF RALEIGH - HE WAS A DISTINGUISHED ROYALIST OFFICER AND FOUGHT IN SEVERAL BATTLES OF THE GREAT CIVIL WAR. AT THE RESTORATION HE BECAME A GENTLEMAN OF THE PRIVY CHAMBER TO KING CHARLES THE SECOND. HAVING LEFT LONDON TO AVOID THE CONTAGION OF THE PLAGUE HE RETIRED SOON AFTERWARDS BEING THEN OF A GREAT AGE. DIED AT THE MANOR OF BOWCOMBE IN THIS PARISH AND WAS BURIED WITHIN THESE PRECINCTS ON THE XXIX DAY OF MAY A.D. MDCLXVI.
